Ryan Coonan: Accredited Exercise Scientist & Fitness Coach
Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES)
Bachelor's Degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Victoria University
Ryan Coonan is an Accredited Exercise Scientist with a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science from Victoria University. At Fortify Movement & Health, he supports everyday people in building strength, improving movement, and developing long-term confidence in their bodies. His approach reflects the Fortify philosophy of Test & Measure — Don’t Guess, using objective assessments to guide personalised exercise programs that support meaningful and sustainable progress.
Ryan has a strong interest in working with athletes across the lifespan, from youth athletes developing fundamental movement skills to adults looking to improve performance, prevent injury, or return to sport. He values pre-season screening and performance assessments, using tools such as AxIT force plates to evaluate strength, balance, and movement capacity. These assessments help identify potential injury risks and provide objective benchmarks that inform targeted training programs.
Having undergone two knee surgeries since 2024, Ryan understands firsthand the challenges that come with injury, rehabilitation, and the uncertainty of returning to movement. This lived experience shapes the way he works with clients. He takes a patient and supportive approach, prioritising safety, movement quality, and achievable progress that helps rebuild confidence in the body over time.
Ryan has competed in Victorian Premier Cricket with Footscray Cricket Club and has coached both junior and representative teams. His sporting background provides a strong understanding of movement development, athletic performance, and the physical demands of competitive sport. However, his greatest passion lies in supporting everyday people; whether they are returning to exercise after injury, managing pain, building strength, or simply wanting to move and feel better in their bodies.
Ryan is committed to ongoing professional development and is currently completing a Master of Clinical Exercise and Rehabilitation at Victoria University, further strengthening his clinical knowledge and evidence-based approach to exercise prescription.
Ryan believes exercise should be accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful. His sessions are supportive, structured, and grounded in evidence-based practice, helping clients build lasting confidence in movement and develop sustainable habits for long-term health.
