Fortify Fitness · Altona North, Victoria
Fortify Fitness is an evidence-based clinical exercise facility in Altona North, led by ESSA-registered Accredited Exercise Scientists. Part of Fortify Movement & Health, we bring clinical rigour and genuine human warmth to every programme — a welcoming space for everyone, including neurodivergent clients and those managing chronic conditions.
Fortify Fitness is part of Fortify Movement & Health — an established clinical exercise facility in Altona North. What we do here isn't generic personal training. It's the careful, methodical application of exercise science to real lives: people managing pain, navigating chronic health conditions, building lasting strength, or simply wanting movement that actually makes sense for them.
We've been part of the Altona North community for years — not as a gym, but as a clinical practice that happens to use exercise as medicine. Every programme we write begins with a proper assessment because we believe you can't build a meaningful plan without first understanding the person in front of you.
That philosophy has a name: the biopsychosocial approach — the understanding that movement, health, and behaviour are deeply interconnected. Physical capacity alone doesn't tell the full story. Your history, your habits, your nervous system, your environment — all of it shapes how your body responds to training and how sustainably you'll change over time. We design programmes that account for all of it.
This means our space is genuinely welcoming — not just as a policy statement, but in practice. We serve clients managing persistent pain, those with complex chronic conditions, and individuals who've previously found mainstream gym settings overwhelming or poorly adapted to their needs, including neurodivergent clients who benefit from structured, predictable, low-sensory environments and practitioner-led guidance.
Serving Altona North, Altona, Altona Meadows, Williamstown, Newport, and Melbourne's inner west from our dedicated clinical facility in Altona North.
Our whole-person approach recognises that lasting health change touches three interconnected dimensions.
Evidence-based exercise programming designed around your body's real capacity — measured, not guessed.
Clinical management of chronic conditions, persistent pain, and long-term wellbeing outcomes grounded in exercise science.
Sustainable change requires understanding habits, motivation, and the human side of health — not just sets and reps.
We've built Fortify to be genuinely inclusive — not as a marketing talking point, but because the clients who need clinical-quality exercise the most are often the ones who've felt least at home in mainstream fitness settings.
Neurodivergent-inclusive programming
Structured, predictable environments and clear communication designed for clients who process the world differently.
Chronic condition management
We work alongside your existing healthcare team for clients living with complex or long-term health needs.
Persistent pain support
Exercise science-led approaches grounded in pain neuroscience — not avoidance, not aggression.
Two ESSA-registered Accredited Exercise Scientists — not generic personal trainers. Every programme we write begins with assessment, is guided by data, and is delivered with genuine care for the person in front of us.

Accredited Exercise Scientist
Matt founded Fortify Fitness with a clear mission: bring genuine exercise science to the inner west. With full ESSA registration as an Accredited Exercise Scientist, he brings clinical rigour and a genuine warmth to every client — whether that's someone returning from injury, managing a chronic condition, or simply wanting a programme built on evidence rather than guesswork.
Areas of Expertise

Accredited Exercise Scientist
Ryan brings the same evidence-based approach to coaching with a particular passion for strength development and body composition. His background in exercise science means every programme he writes is grounded in physiology — not trending fitness content. Clients describe working with Ryan as challenging in the right way: he meets people where they are and builds sustainable, measurable progress.
Areas of Expertise
Both Matt and Ryan are committed to creating an environment where every person feels genuinely welcome. Fortify Fitness actively supports neurodivergent-inclusive programming — we take the time to understand how each individual learns, communicates, and responds to exercise, and tailor our approach accordingly. If you've found mainstream fitness spaces overwhelming or ill-fitting, you'll find something different here.
Every programme at Fortify Fitness begins with a thorough clinical assessment — not a chat and a guess. We use objective measurement tools to understand where you are right now, then build a personalised programme grounded in data and delivered with genuine warmth.
Generic gym programmes rely on templates and intuition. We don't. Before any training begins, your movement, strength, and body composition are measured with clinical-grade tools. That data becomes the foundation of everything that follows — and it's revisited regularly so your programme evolves as you do.
AxIT Strength & Power Testing
Force plates and dynamometers provide objective, reproducible measures of strength and power — the same technology used in elite sport, now accessible in Altona North.
Tanita Body Composition Scanning
Medical-grade Tanita scans give us precise, objective body composition data — muscle mass, fat distribution, and more — so we can track real physiological change over time.
From strength training to persistent pain and neurodivergent-inclusive programming — our specialisms reflect the diversity of the community we serve across Altona North, Williamstown, Newport, and Melbourne's inner west.
Evidence-based strength and power programming built on objective assessment data — not arbitrary templates. We measure where you are, then build a programme that moves you forward.
A biopsychosocial approach to persistent pain — addressing the physical, psychological, and social dimensions together. Movement is medicine when it's guided by science and delivered with care.
Exercise is one of the most powerful tools in chronic disease management. Our ESSA-registered scientists design targeted programmes for cardiovascular health, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and beyond.
We create genuinely welcoming, sensory-aware training environments for neurodivergent clients. Our approach adapts to how you experience the world — no pressure, no judgement, just support.
Objective body composition data from Tanita scanning informs every step of your programme. We track real change with precision — not bathroom scales and guesswork.
Long-term results come from habits that fit your life, not 12-week crash programmes. We work with you on sustainable movement and nutritional strategies grounded in behavioural science.
Fortify Fitness is built to be genuinely inclusive — not just in language, but in practice. Our neurodivergent-inclusive programming means we adapt the sensory environment, communication style, and training structure to suit how you experience the world. You don't need to fit a template. We'll meet you where you are.
Not all fitness professionals are created equal. When you train with an Accredited Exercise Scientist, you're working with someone who has met the gold standard of exercise science qualifications in Australia — and who is committed to keeping it that way.
At Fortify Fitness, both Matt Elphick and Ryan Coonan hold ESSA registration — meaning every programme, every assessment, and every conversation is grounded in genuine clinical expertise. This isn't guesswork dressed up as guidance; it's evidence-based practice delivered with human warmth.
ESSA registration requires a minimum four-year degree in exercise science — far beyond the certificate-level training most personal trainers hold.
ESSA members must meet continuing professional development requirements and adhere to a strict code of ethical conduct, keeping practice evidence-based and current.
Accredited Exercise Scientists can safely work alongside GPs and allied health practitioners to support clients with chronic conditions, persistent pain, and complex health needs.
Our ESSA-grounded approach extends to neurodivergent-inclusive programming — creating a welcoming environment where every client is met with patience, flexibility, and genuine understanding.
Fortify Fitness has built its reputation serving Altona North, Altona, Altona Meadows, Williamstown, Newport, and Melbourne's inner west — not as a franchise or a pop-up, but as an established, community-embedded practice.
Our clients range from athletes chasing performance goals to people navigating chronic conditions, persistent pain, or neurodivergent experiences of movement. We've invested in the assessments, the accreditations, and the relationships that make genuine long-term change possible — because that's what the people in our community deserve.
Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) is the peak professional body for exercise scientists in Australia. ESSA-registered Accredited Exercise Scientists hold a minimum four-year university qualification and maintain ongoing professional development standards.
